Richard set up Cognition in 2005 having worked as a civil engineer for AMEC and Nuttalls on major projects such as the Millenium Dome. With more than 30 years of experience in the industry he has a wealth of experience in engineering and remediation. With established relationships with main contractors, developers, consultants and government organisations, Richard has shaped and developed the company to meet the ever-changing demands of our clients.

Jon has more than 30 years working in a range of environmental fields including contaminated land investigation, remediation and environmental monitoring as a regulator, consultant and contractor. As Technical Manager with the Environmental Agency, Jon managed one of the largest environmental improvement projects in the UK, the Thames Tideway Tunnels Project, from concept design to government approval. Jon also developed and managed an international project on passive chemical monitoring with partners in Europe, US and Australia. Jon is Technical Director for Cognition, specialising in contaminated land remediation, where he has developed remediation strategies and managed numerous projects for housing developers, local authorities and industry including the nuclear industry.
With nearly 25 years of experience in civil engineering and housing development, of which the last 13 years have been building and leading successful teams for operating Divisions of both FTSE 100 and FTSE 250 Developers, Carl has intrinsically been involved in land regeneration ranging from small infill brown field sites through to major housing schemes across the South East and within London.
The positions over this period have required him to be at the forefront of all aspects in running a Division of a major Housing Developer. A number of roles has meant Carl has been responsible for cost plans of complicated developments in and around London. He has gained extensive knowledge of value engineering and commercial aspects of the industry. This has all helped in harnessing his appreciation of the importance in cost control, the opportunities of maximising value and managing both risks and opportunities.
Andy O’Dea has 27 years’ experience in geoenvironmental & geotechnical engineering on sustainable land development and infrastructure projects across the UK and internationally with major consultancies. He has managed and delivered many specialist geoenvironmental and geotechnical projects and large and complicated multidisciplinary land development projects. Andy has extensive experience of contamination risk assessment, waste management, ground gas risk assessment, sustainability assessment, earthworks specification, geotechnical design and EIA.
Andy has held several director roles in the past and, as Technical Director at Cognition, he oversees the technical department. He also assists with project direction, client care, business development and supporting the professional development of the team.
Quality Assurance & Quality Control Director
Throughout over 12 years of remediation experience, Charlie has performed many key roles in several of Cognition’s high-profile projects. Involved in the planning and delivery of remediation projects, Charlie is responsible for liaising with local authorities and regulatory bodies to agree mobile treatment licences and producing waste management plans conforming to the CL:AIRE code of practice, and remediation strategy documentation required for works to commence. Charlie appraises and develops schedules of quality assurance testing required for remediation projects to ensure that works conducted on site meet the designed specifications.
Rob has worked in the fields of construction, demolition, and land remediation for over 12 years. He has experience in both foundation and drainage design and has managed small build projects from design phase through to completion. As a trained geologist, Rob is involved in delivering site investigations and contaminated land investigations. He was originally employed as a senior site chemist and has, throughout his time with Cognition, moved up to manage a number of remediation projects as a project manager, having gained experience in a wide range of remediation techniques including stabilisation, oxidation, bioremediation, and groundwater treatment. In 2019, Rob became a director of Cognition.
Rick joined Cognition after gaining a strong technical background leading the earthworks and remediation for a large principle contractor. Rick’s attention to detail, scientific approach, and practical knowledge proves invaluable in providing our clients with sustainable and cost effective proposals to deliver solutions to a range of brownfield challenges. Rick applies his background in Geology in the understanding and conceptualisation of the subsurface to quantify environmental risk and develop robust and targeted remedial solutions. As a Fellow of the Geological Society London Rick actively contributes to the community through lectures, presentations and shared experience in difficult ground conditions. As Estimating Director Rick applies his expertise in earthworks coupled with a solid understanding of the complete project lifecycle to ensure a sustainable approach is maintained and that cost savings are carried through the project legacy.
Tom brings over 30 years of experience and has completed major remediation, road construction and civil engineering worth in excess of £500 million. Tom has previously worked for main contractors on Argent Kings Cross, the Channel Tunnel and the Greenwich Peninsula projects and has grown three successful businesses from scratch. He has a wealth of knowledge across the industry, including taking projects from the planning stages through to construction phase. He is also a team player who has a reputation for consistently delivering the highest possible standards for all projects on which he has been involved. He has never left a project until it has been completed and is well known for his enthusiasm, commitment and professionalism.
Working within the construction industry for over 40 years, Terry has gained a wealth of experience working on many high-profile jobs such as the Kings Cross Regeneration Project, the remediation works at Shell Haven Oil Refinery, the Harwell LETP, the Millennium Dome, and the Channel Tunnel.
Prior to joining Cognition, Terry spent 7 years as a Director/Contracts Manager for a specialist civil engineering and remediation company. Terry has vast experience in the day-to-day management of resources on large-scale construction and remediation projects, ensuring projects are completed on time and to budget.
Following an academic career in hydrogeology and contaminated land David has over 10 years’ experience in remediation contracting and consultancy. David is responsible for the delivery of key remediation schemes for Cognition and will manage project resources from inception through to completion. His extensive project experience includes delivery of complex remediation projects including former gasworks and Part 2a remediation sites. David will oversee and advise on the technical aspects of the project and maintain the lead communication with clients, designers, and regulators. His experience also brings potential innovative solutions to projects, often leading to programme benefits and commercial savings for clients.
Head of Recruitment and HR
Suzi has considerable experience in Recruitment. Having gained a Degree in Business and HR she worked her way up to Director of a highly regarded Professional Recruitment Consultancy. Her role is to advise and implement Recruitment and HR strategy as well as leading key projects with the Senior Management Team
Health and Safety Manager
With a background in construction and a degree in civil engineering, Abdul has experience working with heavy civil engineering projects, housing developers and major infrastructure, he has worked to successfully deliver multiple projects safely over the past 5 years. A cool and calm individual with a proactive approach to ensure safety is managed at every level of the business creating a positive culture across multiple projects.
Working with the likes of Morgan Sindall, Hochtief UK, Mace and Land Securities, Abdul has developed skills from a variety of sectors and possess an understanding of safety systems, advising at site level and managing client’s and key stakeholder’s expectations.
