The site was formerly occupied by Hospital buildings. The main buildings were Victorian in age, 2–3 storeys in height and occupied the centre of the site. There was also a mid 20th Century single storey building which occupied the northern part of the site. Routine investigations by specialist consultants highlighted the presence of asbestos fibres in the made ground and of fragments of asbestos containing material scattered over the surface and within a topsoil stockpile on site.
The asbestos fibres comprise chrysotile, amosite and crocidolite i.e. white, brown and blue asbestos, and appeared to be small clusters of fibres discretely dispersed through the soil. The materials scattered over the surface appeared to be fragments of asbestos cement. One probable source of this asbestos is the demolition crush. Cognition carried out processing and screening of soil stockpiles to remove asbestos materials identified during site investigations. All materials processed and tested resulted in no asbestos fibres remaining present. The material was further tested and confirmed compliant for re-use on site. This is a further example of Cognition expertise and technique resulting in negligible costly disposal from site and maximum reuse on site. |
