New South Quarter in Croydon is an exciting new development of more than 700 new studio, 1, 2, and 3 bedroom apartments in modern buildings set around their own courtyards and gardens. As a true urban village it combines contemporary living spaces with a café, store, medical centre, nursery, and a range of studio workplaces and offices.

Cognition Land & Water Limited treated heavily contaminated groundwater and bioremediated soils for this impressive mixed residential and commercial development. The site was formerly part of the Croydon Gas Works, which comprised oxide purifiers, benzole plant, railway sidings, liquor storage, gas oil tanks, steam reforming plant, liquid distillate fuel tanks, and water treatment plant. The historic ground contamination present on site principally comprised light aromatic organics, specifically BTEX compounds (Benzene, Toluene, Ethylbenzene, Xylene) and heavy-end Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) compounds and mineral oils.

The project required careful consideration to neighbours, including residential properties. Cognition carried out environmental monitoring including dust, noise, water and odour, to offer the client and regulators re-assurance that there were no problems associated with the development and remediation activities on site.
